I'll bet I'm even more awkward than you, Michael Scott.
I always seem to take a awhile before I actually feel comfortable at my internship/work place. During the first couple of weeks, I'm kind of like the passive, slightly autistic younger sister who just does what she's told and speaks in an unbearably saccharine voice. (Hah, if only they knew the real me...)
I suppose it's because I've always been taught to treat my elders and strangers with a large amount of respect and filial piety and to never forget that I'm always the younger, more innocent- and hence less wise-one. So when I'm around the office, I feel strange to joke around my editors or tease them. Mostly I just giggle a lot and agree with what they say and do as I'm told.

Does anyone else out there have a period of time they go through being meek, shy and quiet before establishing a more non-awkward rapport with their co-workers and bosses? And when does this usually take place? Soon? Please?

I take the same 'strategy' as you and find that it works the best in terms of getting on people's good side. "Keeping your head low". Look at your new environment before you decide how you go about it is a good strategy because it prevents you from rubbing people the wrong way. Now that you're more comfortable and have met everyone in the office and know their names, it's time to introduce Janice. You're ready. Go make some impressions missie!
